Project: occam – Toward a Wordpress-based Peer-reviewed Scholarly Journal
On April 5th, students in the 2012 cohort of the Master of Publishing program made the final presentations for their PUB607 Publishing Technology Project course. And as with years past, the project groups—and the achievements they made—were considerable.

In the Project course, three groups of six students each work for six weeks on a piece of applied research and development. Past years’ projects have covered everything from data management to XML production to social media campaigns. This year’s groups were mostly web-oriented, but with three very different approaches.

The third group was occam, named after the man with the famous razor that cut away blinding complexity. Occam’s project drew from recent history in MPub tech projects: over the past few years, we’ve explored running online submission management and editorial workflow for small magazines via Wordpress, the ubiquitous online content management system. This year, we took a detour from the world of small magazines, and set to work with a fledgling scholarly journal called Amodern, the brainchild of Darren Wershler (Concordia) and Scott Pound (Lakehead).
Amodern is to be “a peer-reviewed, international, open access scholarly journal devoted to the study of media, poetics, and culture. Its purpose is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary conversations about the role of media in the cultural practices of our time.” And Amodern was founded with [...]

Project: Two.Point.Oh – Giving a Public Face to MPub Graduate Work

On April 5th, students in the 2012 cohort of the Master of Publishing program made the final presentations for their PUB607 Publishing Technology Project course. And as with years past, the project groups—and the achievements they made—were considerable.

Past years’ projects have covered everything from data management to XML production to social media campaigns. This year’s groups were mostly web-oriented, but with three very different approaches.

Our second group, Two.Point.Oh, were charged with developing a production and marketing strategy to introduce our body of MPub project reports to a wider audience (currently, they sit on library shelves and in the institutional respository, but nothing more). Originally, this project was going to be a careful re-packaging (via a substantial editorial process) of the very best of the project reports, released as a publisher’s series. But the Two.Point.Oh team began with some audience research, and they came to the conclusion that what’s really valuable about the project reports is their currency; that is, the new ones coming out each term need to get out to their wider audience as soon as possible. Think of this as a version of Chris Anderson’s advice, “In a Long Tail economy, it’s [...]

The first project team, calling themselves Cohort were charged with developing a responsive-design approach to the MPub’s own web presence, so that we would be both phone- and tablet-friendly. The group investigated mobile-first strategies and adaptive approaches such as the “fluid grid” and “goldilocks” methods to acheiving responsive design. In a content analysis of the site’s features, though, they hit up a strategy of their own which they called “mobiletaneous,” in which three main functional areas of the site (and, accordingly, the target audience) were identified, labelled “Learn,” “Read,” and “Engage.” The “Learn” section, they argued, comprising program information about courses, registration, funding opportunities and so on, would likely be primarily accessed by prospective students on a “serious computer.” The “Read” section, which includes both research reports and contemporary [...]

Yesterday I had a thought to finally get hold of Daniel Zomparelli’s highly lauded Poetry is Dead magazine (which I’ve been aware of for a while, but haven’t actually read). I looked at the website, and it told me it was “available in bookstores across Canada.” Right, I said.
My confidence fell right at that point because I live in Vancouver, and if you’ve been to Vancouver recently, you know that the bookstore is next to extinct here. There are a tiny number of holdout exceptions, but Vancouverites are not generally in position to just “go to your local bookstore.” I did check a couple of what I thought were likely spots—but to no avail. I subscribed online intead.
Which is, I think, what we are increasingly doing. I don’t mean subscribing, but ordering online. And this thought dovetailed with a conversation in our family of late about self-publishing. Conventional wisdom says that a self-published author can’t expect to do nearly so well as an author armed with sales representatives and marketing channels.
That may be, but the rise of Amazon means this plays out very differently than it did a decade ago. Nowadays, everything in Amazon (which is nearly everything, period) has the same basic chance as everything else in Amazon, except for what external promotion can leverage. So things with huge media budgets are going to [...]

Last week, MPub alum Jenna Newman and I met up in Ontario for the first major piece of archival research on my project on the untold story of digital innovation at Coach House Press in the 70s and 80s. The folks at the Coach House were connecting computers and phototypesetters back in 1974; pioneering Unix-based typesetting software by the late 1970s, and in the early 1980s were on the bleeding edge of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), the direct precursor to today’s XML. A poetry house, mind.
Our trip took us first to Ottawa, where we spent two days digging through the archives of the Canada Council for the Arts—likely Coach House Press’ primary source of capital in those days. We were digging for references to their early technological innovation in the grant applications of the day. While we found little direct mention of computers in the press Block Grant applications—not surprisingly—we did uncover some pretty interesting Explorations grants going back as far as 1973, involving partnerships with both visual artists and computer scientists from the U of Toronto. But even the Block Grant applications contained offhand mentions of the Press’ forays into the digital age, often in cheeky asides directed at the program officers. We got in a pint of the local stuff with the amazing @craigriggs while we were there too!
We flew in to [...]
